I just love photographing Dads with their kiddos during my family lifestyle sessions. Dads by nature often love to joke around with their littles and make them smile, so these “Dad Poses” are equal parts fun and sweet. I find that Dads and kids both respond well when the photoshoot feels more like a game.
Put on your Mom-tographer Hat, and you, too, can capture your partner in Dad Mode. Here are a few you can try at home, on Father’s Day weekend or any other time.
1. The Airplane
A personal favorite to do with older babies and toddlers. Have Dad lift the child high above his head, and hold for three seconds. Come in for a “landing,” and repeat. The key to this one is doing the up-down motion enough to encourage the giggles. If you’re shooting on your phone, hold the shutter down for a rapid fire burst and then pick your favorite.
2. The Bear Hug
Have Dad get on the child’s level, and give the child a giant bear hug. You can take the photo on either side of the duo to see Dad’s face or your child’s face.
For a variation, have Dad squeeze from behind so that you can see both of their faces. I love those smiles!
3. The Eskimo Kiss
Have Dad and child face each other on the child’s level, or have Dad hold the child “tummy to tummy.” Have them touch noses, aka an Eskimo kiss. Silly faces optional.
4. The Shoulder Ride
This pose is the epitome of dad-ness. Have Dad lift up the child and safely put him on his shoulders, gently holding the child’s legs. For connection, have the child look down at Dad.
Which pose will you try this weekend?
