What is Lifestyle Photography?

I photograph families with a lifestyle approach — but what does that even mean?
“Lifestyle” is a word that you might see thrown around in the photography industry, and honestly, each artist may see it a little differently.
For me, defining “lifestyle” starts with understanding other types of portraiture on either side of the spectrum. In traditional portraiture, everyone is smiling, looking at the camera. The first thing that comes to mind is our church directory photos, where the photographer directed me to place my hands on my husband’s shoulder and angle my head a little… a little more… there, just right. Candid documentary shots could be as simple as people going about their day, and the photographer is just there to document it. I believe that there are photographers who do both of these types of photography beautifully, and I’m not here to be snobbish. But somewhere in between those two is something called Lifestyle Photography, and that’s where you’ll find me.
Lifestyle does, in fact, include posed shots. But maybe it’s better to think of it as directing. I lead you along because that’s MY job. I like to think of my role as creating a safe space for you and your loved ones to come alive, to love and be loved. I might give prompts, or maybe we’ll play a game or do an action. But one of my favorite parts is when families relax into the poses and begin to interact as their natural selves. It’s like they forget there’s a camera there. They’re still posed beautifully (and I might remind you to sit up straight or reposition your arm), but your true selves begin to unfold, and we start to tell your story, together.
Lifestyle Photography is for the family who loves to be together and connect on a heart-level. For the mom who cherishes all the little details of this season and knows that pictures are the only way to hit the “pause button”. For the dad who likes to joke with his kiddos and make them laugh. For the kids who might want to run about — or snuggle into the arms of the ones who care so deeply for them.
Lifestyle Photography is honesty, beauty, and joy.

Krueger Family // Ann Arbor Family Photography

It isn’t too often that I get the chance to photograph three generations, but I can’t think of a better way to celebrate a growing family. This mom of four adult children and two adorable granddaughters contacted me about photographing them on the one day they’d be home together. Her children aren’t little anymore, and their lives have taken them across the globe. These parents put in the hard work of years of supporting, loving, and growing these children, and their investments have surely paid off. It was a joy to watch them on the other side of my camera, especially interacting with the littlest members of the family, and to help them treasure up these few moments together.

Mills family // Ann Arbor Family Lifestyle Photography

It was such a gift to be able to photograph one of my MOPS mama friends this summer with her beautiful family. It was such a fun session –including multiple dance parties– and the gardens of County Farm Park were the perfect setting. Enjoy this family of four!

Peter // Ann Arbor Newborn Lifestyle Session

What a joy it is to watch families change and grow! I’ve been photographing this family from engagement session to wedding day, from bump to baby. There is hardly a better setting for a newborn session than your home. Little Peter was so patient, swaddled tight, snuggled close, or safely posed on the master bed. Some of my very favorites from this day are of Liz and her son. And just wait till you just check out the amazing Star Wars themed nursery!

Four Fun Poses for Photographing Dad and Kids Together on Father’s Day // Photography Tutorial

I just love photographing Dads with their kiddos during my family lifestyle sessions. Dads by nature often love to joke around with their littles and make them smile, so these “Dad Poses” are equal parts fun and sweet. I find that Dads and kids both respond well when the photoshoot feels more like a game.

Put on your Mom-tographer Hat, and you, too, can capture your partner in Dad Mode. Here are a few you can try at home, on Father’s Day weekend or any other time.

1. The Airplane

A personal favorite to do with older babies and toddlers. Have Dad lift the child high above his head, and hold for three seconds. Come in for a “landing,” and repeat. The key to this one is doing the up-down motion enough to encourage the giggles. If you’re shooting on your phone, hold the shutter down for a rapid fire burst and then pick your favorite.

2. The Bear Hug

Have Dad get on the child’s level, and give the child a giant bear hug. You can take the photo on either side of the duo to see Dad’s face or your child’s face.

For a variation, have Dad squeeze from behind so that you can see both of their faces. I love those smiles!

3. The Eskimo Kiss

Have Dad and child face each other on the child’s level, or have Dad hold the child “tummy to tummy.” Have them touch noses, aka an Eskimo kiss. Silly faces optional.

4. The Shoulder Ride

This pose is the epitome of dad-ness. Have Dad lift up the child and safely put him on his shoulders, gently holding the child’s legs. For connection, have the child look down at Dad.

Which pose will you try this weekend?
